Officer Down!
February 28, 2010 – Deputy Ken Collier / San Diego, CA
SAN DIEGO—Authorities say a San Diego County Sheriff’s deputy chasing a wrong-way driver was killed when his patrol vehicle plunged about 100 feet down a freeway embankment.
Sheriff William Gore says the crash occurred early Sunday when the deputy, who had a dispatcher riding along with him, made a u-turn on Route 52 near Santee. His marked SUV collided with a bridge abutment and went over the side.
Gore says Deputy Ken Collier and his civilian passenger, Ryan Debellis, were taken to a hospital where the deputy later died. Debellis was injured.
An allegedly drunk driver who was the subject of the chase was caught nearby. Gore says 23-year-old Jose Jasso Lopez will be charged with vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.

February 22, 2010 Alan Haymaker / Chicago, IL
Alan Haymaker did what his grandfather and father did before him: Worked the streets of Chicago as a police officer.
“He loved being a cop,” his brother-in-law Ron Vogelpohl said. “He was proud of being a cop. I admired him.
“He knew his job was dangerous, but he didn’t fear death,” he added, explaining that Haymaker was deeply religious. “He was at peace with God.”
Haymaker, a sergeant on the force for 21 years, was on his way to the scene of a burglary when he apparently lost control as he took the Irving Park exit off southbound Lake Shore Drive early this morning.
His squad car hit a tree and pole, pinning him, according to Asst. Police Supt. James Jackson. He died about 2 1/2 hours later. He was 56.
“Icy road conditions were a factor,” Jackson said. “Words cannot express the sorrow we feel at his loss.”
The officer’s family was in shock this morning as they struggled to come to terms with his death. This weekend the family was supposed to celebrate Haymaker’s oldest daughter’s birthday.
Family and neighbors in his Portage Park neighborhood described him as a kind man who helped friends and strangers alike.
“He loved people,” Vogelpohl said. “It didn’t matter to him who you were. He cared about prostitutes and treated them as human beings.

February 12, 2010 Officer Robert Heinle / Missoula, MT
Bob Heinle, the Missoula police sergeant paralyzed from the neck down after being gunned down in 1998, died Friday at Community Medical Center. He was 47.

Lisa and Bob Heinle cross the finish line in July 2009, after Lisa ran the Missoula Marathon to raise money for spinal cord research
Because he died of complications from his paralysis, Heinle became the third Missoula officer in history to be killed in the line of duty.
News of his death hit the Missoula Police Department hard.
“He gave life a full shot,” said Missoula Police Chief Mark Muir, who served with Heinle since they both joined the force in 1991.
Muir, occasionally choking back tears, described his friend and colleague as a tough, resilient man who continued to pursue his passions of hunting and fishing until he died.
He was a natural leader who quickly rose to the rank of sergeant early in his career.
“He was a very admirable figure who stepped up and provided leadership at a very young age in his career,” said Muir.
Then came the 9-1-1 call that changed his life.
Early in the evening on Oct. 21, 1998, Heinle was the first to arrive after a bank teller reported a man trying to cash a forged check.
He gave chase to the suspect, James Martin, aka James Trujillo, shortly after spotting him in near the Western Security Bank on the corner of Orange and Broadway. About a minute later, another officer, responding to the call, found Heinle on the ground of the Salvation Army parking lot bleeding from the neck, and radioed the ominous words “officer down.”
That officer, Leila Haack, performed CPR on Heinle before he was transported to St. Patrick Hospital. James Gene Martin was apprehended 30 minutes later; in May of 1999, he was found guilty of numerous crimes, but none more heinous than attempted murder of a police officer. He is serving a life sentence.
The Heinles moved briefly to the Craig Institute in Engelwood, Colo., which specializes in treating those with severe spinal-cord injuries, but Bob Heinle never regained mobility below the neck.

Police Cpl. Jeremy McLaren radioed police dispatch Friday night to say that he had been in a collision, then called Spring Hill Police Chief John Smith to tell him he was OK.
The Nashville native even made phone calls to loved ones while riding in the ambulance.
But just after noon Sunday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, McLaren became the first Spring Hill officer to die from injuries suffered on duty.
“He was very calm, cool and collected,” Smith said of McLaren’s call. “I asked if he was OK and he goes ‘I’m fine.’ I asked if anyone was there yet and he said ‘Nope but I can hear the sirens.’ Jeremy was very alert and his usual self, very comical. He was an impressive young fella.”
McLaren, 28, was driving back to Spring Hill from the Maury County Jail when a pickup truck hit his police cruiser, knocking the car off Highway 31 and into a parking lot. The pickup, driven by Billy Stafford, 48, of Shelbyville, is thought to have run a red light. Stafford and a passenger, Jina Pratt, 39, of Columbia, were treated at Vanderbilt for injuries.

February 7, 2010 – Capt. Timothy Bergeron/Terrebonne Parish, La.
A captain with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office was killed when his motorcycle collided with a car today while escorting a Mardi Gras float, authorities said.
Timothy Joel Bergeron, 49, was struck at about 7 a.m. at La. 311 and Krumbhaar Drive, which is near Polk Street.
Bergeron, a 25-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, was assigned to the agency’s motorcycle unit in 1999. He was promoted to captain last year and supervised school resource officers and deputies in the D.A.R.E. program. He leaves behind a wife and five children.
His duties also extended to public relations, said sheriff’s Maj. Malcolm Wolfe. Bergeron represented the agency at neighborhood watch meetings, gave presentations and took photographs at special events.
“He was very dedicated to the office,” Wolfe said.
Bergeron died at Terrebonne General Medical Center. Sheriff Vernon Bouregois, who had been in Miami to attend today’s Super Bowl game, returned to be with deputies and the officer’s family.
According to preliminary accounts from Terrebonne officials, Bergeron was escorting a float from the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center parking lot to the Southland Mall, on his motorcycle. His blue lights, they said, were flashing and he was using his siren, what police call “running code.”
The reports from the scene, which have not yet been confirmed with State Police, who are investigating the crash, are that Bergeron was northbound on La. 311, coming around the float so that he could block traffic as it passed Polk Street.

An Oconee County sheriff’s deputy was found dead early Sunday pinned between his patrol car and a tree.
It appears that the car of Deputy William Frederick Schuck III had gotten stuck at about 1:35 a.m. on a private dirt road in the 6000 block of North Highway 11 near Walhalla, the sheriff’s office said. He called his wife at about that time, the sheriff’s office said.

The autopsy was performed Sunday morning at the AnMed Medical Center morgue.
The autopsy found that Schuck died as a result of traumatic asphyxiation.
